Mission and Vision Statement

Ministers

Presidents

In the late summer and early fall of 2000, Robert Franke, who later became the first minister of our congregation and is now the Founding Minister Emeritus, passed the word around the Mt. Pleasant area that he was interested in starting a UU fellowship in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Bob had retired a few years before that from a career in academia where he was a biology professor and also provost at Central Michigan University. He went to the UU theology school at the University of Chicago.

 26 people showed up at Deerfield Park, Isabella County on 10/26/00 and we agreed to meet monthly.

The Wesley Foundation allowed us to use their facilities free and we had a few meetings and informal services there beginning in early 2001.

 We began meeting at Art Reach, see the photo below, later in 2001.

In May of 2001 Laura McBride (left), who later was the first president of the UUFCM 2002-2003, and Nancy White (right) , second president 2003-2004, attended a workshop sponsored by the UUA for congregations intending to join the UUA. Here is a photo taken from that conference in Boston:

As part of the process to become a recognized congregation with the UUA we adopted this vision statement and mission statement in 2002:

Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Central Michigan

 Mission Statement:

We are a people of faith:

§        Committed to personal and spiritual growth;

§        Dedicated to the search for truth;

§        Devoted to social action and the acceptance of human diversity;

§        Concerned with the rights of all people.

Vision Statement:

We envision in the next 3-5 years, the following:

§        A minister-led, welcoming, UUA-affiliated church in the Central Michigan area with ~100 adult members and 35 children;

§        Weekly Sunday worship services for a diverse congregation;

§        Lifespan religious education including infant/toddler care, three levels of religious education for children (including teens), and adults throughout each year;

§        Small groups that attract and nurture personal and spiritual connections;

§        Fellowship and fun nurtured with planned social activities;

§        A social action program that includes involvement in a community issue;

§        Committed stewardship of the church indicated by pledges from members that generously support the church’s mission and vision, and active involvement in the church and its operation;

§        A full or part time minister, up to half-time directors of religious education and music, a quarter-time church administrator, and contracted bookkeeper;

§        Renting/leasing space, with a capital campaign underway to possibly buy or build our own church.
